Sustainable Living
Off-Grid & Emergency Resilience
Power, water, food, and comms when the grid goes down.
Hurricanes, freezes, and grid failures are part of life in Hendry County. Building basic resilience — even if you stay on the grid day-to-day — means a power outage is an inconvenience, not a crisis.

Power, water, waste, and resilience basics for off-grid living in Hendry County.
Power
Start with a dual-fuel inverter generator, an interlock kit at the panel, and a fuel rotation. Step up to solar + battery (see Solar Power page) for silent, fuel-free backup.
Water
Store 1 gallon per person per day for at least 14 days. A hand-pump backup on your well (Simple Pump, Bison) keeps water flowing without electricity. Rainwater catchment as backup.
Food
Pantry depth of 30+ days, a freezer with a thermometer alarm, and skills in canning, dehydrating, and curing. Garden + chickens + fruit trees = real food security.
Communications
NOAA weather radio, a GMRS or ham license, and a printed neighborhood contact list. Cell towers fail; radios don't.
